Is your Laundry Room Summer Fresh?

Is your Laundry Room Summer Fresh?

More and more importance is given to laundry room design and décor. Over the years, this once forgotten space has become an integral part of the home, offering countless DIY opportunities for handymen and women. However, keeping your home safe is utmost important when it comes electric appliances in the laundry room, especially your clothes dryer.

“It is important to have your dryer vent cleaned and in good working condition to keep your home and family safe”, explains David Jafine, vice-president for Dundas-Jafine Inc, an air distribution product manufacturer for over 80 years.

Semi annual inspections of your dryer duct and vents for any obstructive debris like lint, clothing, dryer sheets and nests is imperative and prudent. Here are a few benefits of keeping your dryer duct clean:

Prevent dryer fires: The number one reason dryer fires start is failure to clean dryer transition ducts. According to the National Fire Protection Association, over 90% of all appliance fires are dryer related. Dryer fires are in fact the source of over 14,000 fires per year, resulting in over 9 deaths, 420 injuries, and over $222 million in property damages.

Eliminate mold issues:  A full load of wet clothes placed in a dryer contains about 2 liters of water. A clean and properly installed dryer venting system is critical to ensuring that water is fully expelled outdoors during the drying cycle. If the moisture isn’t escaping through the dryer vent for any reason, it can cause mold growth in the home.

Save Energy: Lint accumulation, clogs, or animal nests in dryer vent lines can cause restricted airflow through the dryer vent system. Keeping your dryer ducts clean will also save energy and extend your dryer’s life.

It is recommended to clean out dryer transition ducts twice a year. A manual Dryer Lint Removal Kit or a Drill Powered Duct Brush are easy to use tools that will help keep dryer duct clean and lint free. Installing a secondary lint trap on your exhaust duct is also a smart way to reduce fire risks in your home.
